Safety on and off the ski slopes

To ensure that accidents and collisions with other winter sports enthusiasts while skiing remain the exception, there are a few rules of conduct to follow. These help to increase safety on the slopes. Caution is also required when skiing off the slopes!

Overview of the FIS rules of conduct:

  1. Consideration for others
Behave in such a way that no one is endangered or injured.
  2. Control of speed
Adapt your speed and manner of skiing to your ability, as well as to the terrain, snow and weather conditions – and pay attention to the traffic density.
  3. Choice of route when overtaking
Skiers or snowboarders approaching from behind must choose their line in such a way that they do not endanger those ahead.
  4. Overtaking with sufficient distance
You may overtake from above, below, right or left – but always with enough distance.
  5. Entering and starting
When entering a slope, starting again after stopping or moving uphill, make sure that you do not endanger others – always look up and down the slope.
  6. Stopping on the slopes
Avoid stopping on narrow or blind spots. In the event of a fall, clear the spot as quickly as possible.
  7. Climbing and descending on foot
Those on foot – climbing or descending – must keep to the side of the slope.
  8. Respect for signs and markings
All signs and markings on the slope must be observed.
  9. Assistance in case of accidents
In case of accidents: helping is a duty.
  10. Identification in case of accidents
Involved persons and witnesses must provide their name and contact details in the event of an accident.

For your safety

Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis and the company Recco want to work together to increase safety in the ski area.
The RECCO® avalanche rescue system is used worldwide for the fast localisation of buried victims.

Tips for safe freeriding in open terrain

  • Never go alone. In open terrain, the buddy principle applies: always set off together, watch out for each other and provide support in case of emergency.
  • Check avalanche and weather conditions. Before starting, always check the current avalanche report, snow and weather conditions. A short exchange with locals can also be helpful.
  • Never without an avalanche transceiver. An avalanche transceiver is essential equipment. Before the tour, check that everything is complete and working properly.
  • Pay attention to warning signs. Avalanche warning lights, markings and signs in the ski area must be observed – they are there for your safety.
  • Save emergency numbers. The most important numbers should be stored in your phone – including the emergency call centre of the Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis cable cars.
